Everyman's Guide to the Mysteries of Agatha Christie PDF
By:Bruce Pendergast
Published on 2004 by Trafford Publishing

Everyman's Guide to the Mysteries of Agatha Christie is a reference book covering Christie's 238 stories. It provides data never before published about both important and trivial facts. Dedications, time periods, and locations have been laboriously researched, and provided with |time warp| explanations. Even trivial data such as newspapers (100 in all), pubs (95) and automobiles (136) are shown as well as each story in which they are listed. English sayings totalling 259 are shown with the book(s) in which they appear, including a brief explanation of their meaning. Yet Guide is much more than a list of facts. It is an informative reference book about Christie's writings. As well, different perspectives on many of the perplexing mysteries within her mysteries are provided. Finally, Guide is not an alphabetical list of stories or characters. Instead, it lists many entrancing |errors| of sketches and text with comments explaining where possible the reasons for their existence. Most importantly, |Guide| does not betray any book's endings nor the identity of the villain, a rule that genuine Christie devotees always try to uphold.

By:Dale L. Walker
Published on 1998-11-15 by Forge Books

|All of history is mystery,| Dale L. Walker says, and he proves his point in this lively, humorous--and rational--approach to the West's greatest puzzles. Did Davy Crockett, for example, go down swinging Ol' Betsy, defending the ramparts of the Alamo--or was he captured? Who is buried in Jesse James's grave? Was the man Pat Garrett shot that night really Billy the Kid? How did Black Bart, |the gentleman bandit,| disappear? Did Sacajawea, the famous |Bird Woman| who scouted for Lewis and Clark, die twice? The possibilities unfold as Walker brings together little-known facts and the elusive connections that shed light on the biggest enigmas of the American West. Gnomon PDF
By:Nick Harkaway
Published on 2018-01-09 by Vintage

A Best Science Fiction Book of 2017 -- The Guardian From the widely acclaimed author of The Gone-Away World and Tigerman, comes a virtuosic new novel set in a near-future, high-tech surveillance state, that is equal parts dark comedy, gripping detective story, and mind-bending philosophical puzzle. In the world of Gnomon, citizens are constantly observed and democracy has reached a pinnacle of 'transparency.' Every action is seen, every word is recorded, and the System has access to its citizens' thoughts and memories--all in the name of providing the safest society in history. When suspected dissident Diana Hunter dies in government custody, it marks the first time a citizen has been killed during an interrogation. The System doesn't make mistakes, but something isn't right about the circumstances surrounding Hunter's death. Mielikki Neith, a trusted state inspector and a true believer in the System, is assigned to find out what went wrong. Immersing herself in neural recordings of the interrogation, what she finds isn't Hunter but rather a panorama of characters within Hunter's psyche: a lovelorn financier in Athens who has a mystical experience with a shark; a brilliant alchemist in ancient Carthage confronting the unexpected outcome of her invention; an expat Ethiopian painter in London designing a controversial new video game, and a sociopathic disembodied intelligence from the distant future. Embedded in the memories of these impossible lives lies a code which Neith must decipher to find out what Hunter is hiding. In the static between these stories, Neith begins to catch glimpses of the real Diana Hunter--and, alarmingly, of herself. The staggering consequences of what she finds will reverberate throughout the world. A dazzling, panoramic achievement, and Nick Harkaway's most brilliant work to date, Gnomon is peerless and profound, captivating and irreverent, as it pierces through strata of reality and consciousness, and illuminates how to set a mind free. It is a truly accomplished novel from a mind possessing a matchless wit infused with a deep humanity.

Aldini a Romantic Comedy in Four Acts (Classic Reprint) PDF
By:Henry H. Morrill
Published on 2018-01-22 by Forgotten Books

Excerpt from Aldini a Romantic Comedy in Four Acts Scene I - (ih the boudoir of Mlle. Irene Beauchamp, Paris, October 17, 1910, 8 p. M. She is seated with her Aunt and chaperon, Heloise Beauchamp, at the table, reading, while her Aunt is sewing. She puts down the paper she has been reading and turns to her Aunt and says: ) irene - Auntie, did you see how Brunhilde was encircled with flames last night? Auntie - Yes, and it seemed to me a very dangerous thing to do. What if she had caught fire? Irene - Well, I suppose they have firemen in the wings, in case that should happen; but it was such a strange thing to do on the stage. Wagner was certainly a dramatic poet, as well as a great composer. Auntie - Yes, indeed, but I have always wondered why he took his subjects from myth or legend, when he might have treated real people and events, such as we are familiar with. Mozart's Marriage of Figaro, Rossini's Barber of Seville, and our own Gounod's Marguerite, or Faust, as they call it in Germany, are much more human and lifelike than any of Wagner's operas. In the third book in the Beautiful Bastard series, an agreement between a venture capitalist and a bookish woman quickly becomes a very NSFW version of My Fair Lady. A bombshell bookworm. A chronic Casanova. And a lesson in chemistry too scandalous for school. When Hanna Bergstrom receives a lecture from her overprotective brother about neglecting her social life and burying herself in grad school, she’s determined to tackle his implied assignment: get out, make friends, start dating. And who better to turn her into the sultry siren every man wants than her brother’s gorgeous best friend, Will Sumner, venture capitalist and unapologetic playboy? Will takes risks for a living, but he’s skeptical about this challenge of Hanna’s…until the wild night his innocently seductive pupil tempts him into bed- and teaches him a thing or two about being with a woman he can’t forget. Now that Hanna’s discovered the power of her own sex appeal, it’s up to Will to prove he’s the only man she’ll ever need.

In this volume, Doug Underwood asks whether much of what is now called literary journalism is, in fact, 'literary,' and whether it should rank with the great novels by such journalist-literary figures as Twain, Cather, and Hemingway, who believed that fiction was the better place for a realistic writer to express the important truths of life.

By:Joy Williams
Published on 2015-09-08 by Vintage

The legendary writer’s first collection in more than ten years—and, finally, the definitive one. A literary event of the highest order. Joy Williams has been celebrated as a master of the short story for four decades, her renown passing as a given from one generation to the next even in the shifting landscape of contemporary writing. And at long last the incredible scope of her singular achievement is put on display: thirty-three stories drawn from three much-lauded collections, and another thirteen appearing here for the first time in book form. Forty-six stories in all, far and away the most comprehensive volume in her long career, showcasing her crisp, elegant prose, her dark wit, and her uncanny ability to illuminate our world through characters and situations that feel at once peculiar and foreign and disturbingly familiar. Virtually all American writers have their favorite Joy Williams stories, as do many readers of all ages, and each one of them is available here.
